This exploration of gesture, form and motion makes use of purpose-built tools to apply overlapping strokes of acrylic ink to handmade paper. Brush work immediately follows to smudge, distort and add detail before the ink has had a chance to dry.
This approach to creating line work with varied thickness and pronounced circular endpoints evolved from early experiments rolling steel bearing balls dipped in ink onto paper. This approach encourages intentional gesture-based forms where earlier techniques generated marks that were more random in nature.
My first experience working with handmade paper, this series uses cotton rag paper produced in the village of Tarihal in South India. Made by Khadi Papers, the material proved an excellent surface for high-contrast acrylic ink applications like this.
